Foraging Bees

The¬†foraging bees¬†, ‚Äúvisiting‚ÄĚ the flowers surrounding the hive in search of nectar, collect the¬†pollen¬†and then¬†group it¬†in the form of small¬†grainy¬†balls¬†, with an external shell.

Bee's Baskets

The balls of pollen stick to the paws rear of bees, thanks to baskets which perform the function of small bags or pockets .

trasporto del polline

The pollen is collected and transported to the hive by these industrious insects to provide food to the colony; in fact, it represents the raw material used by nurse bees to produce royal jelly intended for feeding the larvae and the queen bee .

Generally collecting pollen exceeds the actual needs of the hive inhabitants, so beekeepers have devised an ingenious method to collect it directly from foraging bees .

In essence, these are¬†perforated screens¬†(similar to grids) through which the bees, returning from the surrounding environment, must pass to enter the hive;¬†the holes are large enough to ‚Äú¬†scratch away¬†‚ÄĚ by retaining the¬†pollen¬†on their surface.

Organic Beekeeping:
what does it mean?

Miele certificato Biologico:
cosa comporta?

The different plant species produce pollen for reproductive purposes , in special structures of the flower called anthers : the pollen in fact represents the male gametes of the plant which, joining the female ovules contained in the ovary, give rise to the seeds .

Pollen can in some cases be light and impalpable , therefore transportable by the wind, while other types of pollen are more voluminous and heavier , as well as definitely sticky, and must be carried by pollinating insects or by birds that visit the flowers.

Its weight and characteristics therefore depend directly on the flowers in which the foraging bees go to look for pollen .
