Table of Contents
Aloe Arborescens Plant, the "cousin" of Aloe Vera:
Native to South Africa, Aloe Arborescens Miller is a succulent plant, known for its many phytotherapeutic properties.
Aloe Arborescens has long, lance-shaped, serrated, spiny rosette leaves that swell and deflate in order to withstand even very long periods of drought. Since it is also a xerophytic plant (plants adapted to live in environments characterized by long periods of drought or arid or desert climate), manages not to lose water either from stomata or from any wounds thanks to a special self-sealing gel.
Then there are substantial characteristics that differentiate Aloe Arborescens from Aloe Vera: in fact, you should know that the Aloe Arborescens is much more concentrated in active ingredients than Aloe Vera, with some of them 3 times higher.
Aloe Arborescens Miller vs Aloe Vera Barbadensis
This distinctive plant is often mistakenly confused with its more famous “cousin,” called Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Miller).
At first glance they may in fact seem similar, but when looked at in detail, important differences can be seen such as:
- Leaves: the leaves of the Aloe Arborescens are much lighter and less watery (they contain less water, and thus are more concentrated in active ingredients) while the
leaves of the Aloe Vera are more swollen and larger (they can weigh up to 2 kg) but, as they contain more water, are less concentrated in active ingredients.
- Flowers: The flowers of Aloe Arborescens are red, while those of Aloe Vera are yellow.
- Form: aloe vera develops as a head and has a clearly visible starting root, thealoe arborescens has a chaotic central stem and is rich in stems, in fact, the root cannot be identified.
Aloe Arborescens Cultivation:
The cultivation of Aloe Arborescens is not widespread compared to Aloe Vera where there are realities, especially in South America, with hundreds of hectares under cultivation.
The main cultivars of Aloe Arborescensare found in Italy and Spain, although they are most common in Italy.
However, in Italy, there are widespread Greenhouse cultivation of Aloe Arborescens.
which do not allow optimal and vigorous growth of the plant. They are very useful for growing ornamental plants in pots, however, they are not optimal for qualitative plant growth as they In fact, it has been shown that the development of certain active ingredients and phytocompounds in the plant is related to the amount of light the plant receives.
Moreover, in an enclosed environment such as a greenhouse, the air quality is definitely different than what we can find in an open ecosystem.
Aloe Arborescens cultivation protocol by AloeVonderweid:
We at AloeVonderweid have been growing Aloe Arborescens in Sicily since as far back as 1997, using Sustainable Farming techniques.
In fact, we do not employ chemically synthesized substances such as fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides, fungicides and pesticides in general.
If necessary, substances of natural origin can be used, such as specially selected plant extracts, insects and minerals which, dispersed on the soil, modify its chemical and physical characteristics, helping to create a more protected environment for our plants.
"We at Vonderweid firmly believe in sustainable agriculture, its goals, its rigor and its respect for the environment, even if this means depending more closely on natural events (such as rainfall or drought) and sometimes risking lower yields than can be obtained from a traditionally exploited field. Traditional farming techniques are often directed toward an exploitation of the soil that produces a "bloated" type of plant, beautiful in its appearance but poor in content. Our choice instead aims at producing plants in harmony with the environment in which they live and rich in active ingredients."
Aloe Arborescens, Chemical composition?:
After the 1940s, in the wake of the increasingly frequent positive results obtained from the use of this plant, intensive research began that allowed science to precisely establish the chemical and physical characteristics ofAloe Arborescens.
This research has been progressively growing, with the goal of unlocking every secret about the complex composition of the organic molecules and individual active ingredients of this plant.
We currently know that the Aloe Arborescens leaves contain more than 200 active ingredients, while its juice around the 160 active ingredients.
From Mature leaves of Aloe Arborescens plants (they must be at least 6/7 years old) a gel can be extracted that is taken for its countless properties and benefits.
In Aloe Arborescens gel, also called Aloe Arborescens Juice (not to be confused with the exudate of Aloe Arborescens) we can find, in addition to the normal water content:
